A Majestic Christmas Tree Has Arrived in Campus Martius Park

The 66-foot-tall tree will be decked out in lights in advance of the 21st Detroit Tree Lighting Ceremony later this month.

It’s (almost) Christmas time in the city! Detroit’s downtown Christmas tree arrived at Campus Martius Park yesterday. Crews are now hard at work decking the tree out with 25,000 lights in preparation of Detroit’s 21st annual tree lighting ceremony later this month.

The Michigan-grown Norway spruce traveled over 200 hundred miles from Manton, a small town in northern Michigan, to help Detroit residents kick off the holiday season. The 66-foot-tall tree will tower over tons of fun holiday activities for families in downtown Detroit, including ice skating, holiday markets and more festive events and kid-friendly attractions.

“This tree is going to be the centerpiece for the holiday season,” said David Cowan, Chief Public Spaces Officer of Downtown Detroit Partnership. “Over the next two weeks, [the tree] will be installed and decorated by a crew of 10 experts and adorned with more than 25,000 LED lights, hundreds of oversized ornaments and a 7-foot star on the top.”

This year, families can view the tree from Chalet 313, a new holiday hangout space. Overlooking the park and Christmas tree, this cozy space will feature comfy seating and a full bar for families to warm up and hang out as they enjoy the twinkling lights and more holiday fun.
