James and the Giant Peach at the Bonstelle Theatre in Detroit

Explore the world with 'James and the Giant Peach' Nov. 13-22, 2015, at the Bonstelle Theatre on Wayne State University's campus.

Families can embark on a peachy adventure across the Atlantic with orphan James and his four human-like bug friends (and one arachnid) inside a giant peach when James and the Giant Peach comes to Wayne State University’s Bonstelle Theatre, Nov. 13-22, 2015.

Join this band of vagabonds’ adventures chasing a runaway peach, dodging sharks at sea and flying above the ocean, courtesy of five hundred seagulls.

Whether your family is new or returning fans of the classic, you’ve never seen an adaptation like this! It’s told through puppetry, live action and storytelling in an original production.

“Although the story was written more than 50 years ago, I feel the themes of perseverance and friendship transcend the decades to resonate with the youth of today,” guest associate director Katie Campbell says in a press release.

Detroit native Joseph Paul Nix, who plays James, says in a press release for the show that he identifies with the child in growing up “in an environment that seems to offer no sense of solitude. Like James, I quickly found that theater is in every part of me and has strengthened my will to live for something larger than myself.”

So don’t miss out on this opportunity to get imaginative and witness the fruits of experience with this coming-of-age tale.

Prior to each performance, the audience is encouraged to construct their own paper seagulls to add to the fleet that aids James in his flight across the Atlantic. The crafts begin promptly at 6 p.m.

Show times are as follows:

  • Friday, Nov. 13: 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 14: 2 and 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 15: 2 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 20: 7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 21: 7 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 22: 2 p.m.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for students from any school, Wayne State University alumni and senior citizens ages 62 and over.
