Bedol Water-Powered Alarm Clock

Just add water: That’s all you’ve got to do with the new Bedol Water-Powered Alarm Clock. No batteries needed: This eco-friendly time teller will wake up your kids right on time – running off nothing but plain-old H20.

Bedol features a four-ounce water reservoir that powers the clock for anywhere from eight to 12 weeks – if not more! Set a daily or hourly alarm, or use a 12- or 24-hour time setting.

So, how does it work? There are metal plates inside of the water reservoir, and the ions from the water act as a generating current between the plates. It is this energy that powers Bedol. Over time, the water will need to be changed to allow new and fresh ions to work their magic. But no worries – a built-in memory chip remembers the time, so no resetting is necessary.

Shaped like a water droplet, Bedol alarm clocks come in vibrant green, charcoal, blue, pink and purple. Each costs $29 and can be purchased on Bedol’s wesbite. Based in California, this fun, forward-thinking company has been creating fresh, modern designs for almost 20 years (their clientele has included the likes of FAO Schwartz and the Museum of Modern Art).

Bedol sounded pretty amazing – so I put it to the test. And as soon as I filled it with water and it turned on, I fell in love. Honestly, the idea of a water-powered clock was intriguing, but when it actually worked – well, that was icing on the cake.

The directions will walk you through the setup process, which is fairly simple considering there are two "mode" and two "set" buttons – that’s all.

There isn’t a radio, but the alarm allows you to set an hourly chime as well as a regular alarm. The alarm sounds for 30 seconds and then shuts off. It’s not one of those nerve-bending, high-pitches sounds; just beeps. It makes for a somewhat soothing sound so early in the morning.

Simple, eco-friendly and absolutely adorable.
