Teen Candle Making at the Detroit Candle Co.

Candles have brought light and warmth to humankind for more than 5,000 years. And teen girls can experience this age-old art, with a decidedly modern twist, at Power of Girlhood/The Light Within – a special candle making workshop for teens happening noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2012.

Girls ages 13 to 18 are invited to Detroit Candle Co. to create their own personalized candle to take home. They'll also meet women entrepreneurs from the metro Detroit area who will share stories of following their dreams.

Detroit Candle Co., founded by a Detroit woman as an outlet for her candle-making hobby, specializes in yummy-smelling, hand-poured soy candles in a variety of charming designs. The shop also stocks candle accessories and handmade gifts by local artists.

The event, which costs $15, includes lunch and a personalized candle. A part of the proceeds will go to the Power of Girlhood, a mentorship initiative for metro area girls.

For registration and additional details, visit the Metro Parent calendar listing for the teen candle making event at Detroit Candle Company.
