Civil War Encampment at Kensington Metropark in Milford

Gather your troop and invite them to travel back in time to see what life was like during the American Civil War at the Civil War Encampment at Kensington Metropark in Milford, happening May 11-12, 2013.

The 9th Kentucky Reenactors Association will bring the stuff your kids learn about in history class to life at this two-day event, starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Spring Hill Picnic Area will be transformed into a Civil War encampment, full of neat stuff to see, do and learn.

There will be demonstrations of infantry weapon and military maneuver drills. See the re-enactors go through the drills from noon until 3 p.m. each day. Then, kids can learn the drills from 2 to 3 p.m.

Saturday, families will enjoy a 1860s-style baseball game – following all the same rules they would have followed in the game around 150 years ago – at 4 p.m. Then, around 7 p.m., head over to the Spring Hill Picnic Shelter for a musical performance. All the music will be true to this historic era.

Got a chef in the group? He or she will be interested in see the cooking demonstration using historic techniques. There will also be a variety of other demonstrations throughout the weekend, the metropark notes on its website. On Saturday, the event ends after the 7 p.m. concert, and on Sunday, the camp closes at 5 p.m.

Although the event itself is free, there is a $5 vehicle permit fee, or families can purchase an annual permit for $25.
