Families looking for a winter activity in downtown Birmingham can bundle up for BRRmingham Blast, a free outdoor festival returning in January 2026 with zip lines, fire pits and cold-weather fun.
The one-day event transforms part of downtown into a walkable, car-free space filled with activities designed to get people outside during a quieter time of year. Organized by Downtown Birmingham, the festival has become a familiar winter tradition for local families searching for something fun between the holidays and the start of spring sports and programs.

BRRmingham Blast runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, in downtown Birmingham.
Activities stretch along South Old Woodward Avenue between Maple Road and Brown Street. That section of the street is closed to traffic during the festival, allowing families to move easily between activities without worrying about cars. Because everything is concentrated along one corridor, it’s easy to see what’s happening and decide how long you want to stay.
What families will find once they arrive
The biggest draw for many kids — and plenty of adults — is the zip line that runs the length of the street. The ride is free but comes with safety rules. Riders must be at least 6 years old, weigh at least 40 pounds and weigh no more than 225 pounds. Lines typically close about an hour before the festival ends so staff can safely accommodate everyone already waiting.
Beyond the zip line, families can warm up at fire pits set up for marshmallow roasting or step into heated tents when the cold starts to creep in. Live entertainment is scheduled throughout the day, though specific performance times are not always posted in advance.
Food trucks are part of the experience, offering warm meals and snacks for purchase. Nearby downtown restaurants also remain open, which gives families an easy option to head indoors if kids need a longer break from the cold.
Parking and getting around downtown
Parking is free in the Pierce and Peabody municipal parking structures during the event, according to Downtown Birmingham. Both garages are a short walk from South Old Woodward Avenue.
Organizers recommend arriving earlier in the day, especially for families hoping to ride the zip line, since crowds tend to build by midday. With streets closed to vehicles, strollers are easier to navigate than at many winter events, though parents should still expect uneven pavement and typical winter conditions.
How winter weather affects the experience
BRRmingham Blast is held rain or shine, and weather plays a big role in how the day feels. Many parents plan ahead by dressing kids in layers and packing extra gloves or socks, especially for younger children who want to stay outside longer.
While the festival runs all day, families don’t need to commit to a full six hours to enjoy it. Some choose to stop by for a short visit — a zip line ride, a few marshmallows by the fire — and head home once fingers and toes start to get cold.
