Wild Winter African Adventure at the Detroit Zoo

We know you love the Detroit Zoo. But you may not know this animal hotspot is hoppin’ even in the winter months. And you can check out some of its cool exhibits during three Wild Winter Weekends events.

Now in its seventh year, this frosty affair welcomes up to 2,000 people and features chats with zookeepers, enrichment activities and arts and crafts. There will be live performances, too! The fun, which kicked off on Jan. 14-15, continues Feb. 11-12, 2012. And this time, the zoo is celebrating Black History Month with the Wild Winter African Adventure.

An interactive drum lesson and dance performances – brought to you by Kevin Collins’ Kuungana African Drum and Dance Company – is just the beginning of the fun. David Gakure, the zoo’s education specialist and a Kenyan naturalist, shares stories with the crowd.

From noon to 1:30 p.m., the Wild Swan Theatre performs Under the African Sky. To boot, African animal enrichment programs, arts and crafts and more are included in the two-day event.

If you miss the February shebang, there’s still one more chance to catch the wintertime event next month. March’s theme is Safari Social, happening March 10-11. The family fun includes face painting, more arts and crafts, scavenger hunts and zookeeper presentations.

These weekend events are free with zoo admission, which is $15 for ages 15-plus and $8 for ages 2-14, and they take place 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
