Metro Detroit museums’ free admission days families shouldn’t miss in 2026

When to go, who qualifies and how families can visit local museums for free.

Families across metro Detroit don’t have to spend much to explore the region’s top museums in 2026, if they know when to go. With monthly free admission days, county resident perks and statewide access programs, parents can plan museum visits that fit their budget and schedule.

From science centers and art museums to hands-on history spaces, metro Detroit offers several ways for families to explore museums without paying full admission. Some museums offer free days every month, while others are always free for local residents or participate in programs that reduce costs for families who qualify.

This guide breaks down when free admission is available, what’s included and what parents should know before planning a visit.

Note: Free admission days and policies can change, so it’s always best to check ahead before heading out.

  • Address: 39221 Woodward Ave., Bloomfield Hills

Families can plan a free evening visit to Cranbrook Institute of Science on the first Friday of each month.

General admission is free from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the first Friday, making it easier for parents to visit after school or work. Free admission includes the permanent galleries, outdoor science garden and nature trails.

Ticketed experiences, including the planetarium, exploreLAB programs and traveling exhibits, require separate admission. On other Fridays, visitors arriving after 5 p.m. should expect discounted admission rather than free entry.

  • Address: 5200 Woodward Ave., Detroit

Families living in Macomb, Oakland or Wayne counties can visit the Detroit Institute of Arts without worrying about admission costs.

General admission is always free for residents of the three counties thanks to the tri-county millage. Parents need to show a valid ID at the admissions desk. Children ages 5 and younger are admitted free regardless of residency.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

Dossin Great Lakes Museum

  • Address: 100 Strand Drive, Belle Isle

Families interested in Detroit’s connection to the water can explore the Dossin Great Lakes Museum along the Detroit River on Belle Isle.

The museum highlights Great Lakes maritime history, including shipping, shipbuilding and life on the river. Hands-on exhibits and large-scale artifacts help kids understand how boats, cargo and crews shaped the region.

Admission costs $5 for adults and children. Children younger than 6 are free. Detroit Historical Society members receive free admission, and a free Detroiter membership is available for residents of Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park.

The museum is open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. A state Recreation Passport is required for vehicles entering Belle Isle, but walking, biking and public transit do not require a pass.

General admission is always free, making it an easy option for a low-cost outing. Donations are accepted but not required. Interactive exhibits explore dinosaurs, wildlife, earth science and human history, with plenty of hands-on displays for younger visitors.

The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed Mondays, with occasional exceptions.

More free museum admission opportunities

Bank of America Free Days

Parents with a Bank of America card can take advantage of free museum admission on the first full weekend of each month.

Participating metro Detroit museums offer free general admission on Saturday and Sunday to eligible Bank of America, Merrill or Bank of America Private Bank cardholders who present their card and a photo ID. The benefit typically covers one admission per cardholder, so families should expect to pay regular admission for additional guests unless stated otherwise.

Michigan Activity Pass

Families with a Michigan library card can save on outings through the Michigan Activity Pass program.

The program connects public library cardholders with free or discounted admission to museums, cultural attractions, parks and recreation areas across the state. Passes are reserved online through local libraries, and availability and restrictions vary by destination, so planning ahead is key.

Museums For All Initiative

Families who receive food assistance can stretch their outing budget through the Museums for All program.

Museums for All provides free or reduced admission at more than 1,500 museums nationwide for visitors who receive SNAP benefits. Families present a valid EBT card and photo ID at participating museums. Admission details and guest limits vary by location.
