How Oakland Early College prepares students for college success

Oakland Early College offers a small, supportive learning environment where students earn college credit while developing independence, confidence and real-world readiness.

At Oakland Early College, community is the foundation of learning. With just 185 students total, the school’s intentionally small size allows educators to build strong relationships and provide individualized support that helps students thrive academically and personally.

Located on the campus of Oakland Community College (OCC), Oakland Early College gives high school students the opportunity to earn real college credit while benefiting from a close-knit school environment where every student is known, supported and valued.

This balance of independence and guidance supports students as they move from high school into college and future pursuits.

A small school with a big impact

What sets Oakland Early College apart is the strength that comes from its size. Small class settings and a strong teacher-to-student ratio allow educators to understand each student’s goals, learning style and challenges.

“Because we are such a close-knit community, our teachers truly know their students,” says Morrison Borders, Head of School. “That connection leads to personalized learning, meaningful support and stronger outcomes.”

Students benefit from an environment that encourages collaboration, respect and accountability, creating a school culture that feels less like an institution and more like a community.

Academics that bridge high school and college

Oakland Early College offers a meticulous academic experience designed to support a wide range of college and career pathways. Students enroll in college courses at Oakland Community College while completing challenging high school coursework aligned to their individual goals.

This dual approach allows students to earn college credit early while developing the academic skills needed for long-term success. Dedicated staff closely monitor progress and provide built-in academic support, ensuring students feel guided every step of the way.

The result is a learning experience that both challenges students and helps them develop the skills and confidence needed for the next stage.

A school culture centered on belonging

The school’s culture is welcoming, supportive and deeply connected. At the start of the school year, students participate in shared experiences designed to build relationships and cultivate a sense of belonging.

Beginning-of-the-year kickoff activities, off-campus field trips and the annual fall apple orchard visit help students form friendships and feel connected to their peers. Throughout the year, students support one another academically and socially, reinforcing the school’s collaborative spirit.

These shared experiences deepen connections and play an important role in shaping the Oakland Early College community.

Opportunities outside the classroom

Students at Oakland Early College have access to a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. On campus, students participate in clubs such as HOSA, Student Government, National Honor Society, Cinema Club and more. They can also join clubs offered through Oakland Community College, expanding their interests and experiences.

Athletically, students may compete on West Bloomfield High School’s highly rated sports teams, including traditional sports like football and basketball as well as unique options such as equestrian, sailing and figure skating.

Preparing students for independence

Oakland Early College is an application-based program open to Oakland County students entering grades 9-11. Because the school is located on a college campus, students are expected to demonstrate maturity, responsibility and independence.

With the freedom to navigate a college environment and manage their own schedules comes increased responsibility, a challenge well-suited for students eager to take ownership of their learning.

Oakland Early College provides the structure, guidance and support students need to grow into self-directed learners ready for college and beyond.
