Public Art by Christina Krysiak of Ferndale Wins Mural Award

Meet talented metro Detroit teen Christina Krysiak, who is one of the 2018 winners of Ferndale's community mural inclusivity contest.

Three girls with paint splattered across their eyes: This original design is the subject is among the newest murals in Ferndale.

It was created by Christina Krysiak, 17 – and her piece is one of three designs chosen for display by the Ferndale Arts and Cultural Commission for its community inclusivity mural contest.

The local teen got involved with art at a young age.

“In the morning I would always draw in my sketchbook in bed,” she says. “Then it evolved into portrait drawings.”

Since she usually creates more realistic pieces, Krysiak says this public art mural design was actually out of her comfort zone. But that she wanted to capture Ferndale, an artsy city, by using lots of color and merging it into a more abstract “street art” type of design.

The girls in her mural all have their eyes covered in paint as part of a statement about the struggle women face with being judged.

“We look a lot with our eyes, and people can be really judgmental about what they see,” Krysiak explains, adding that women are often a main target of judgmental looks.

Her mural is painted on the outside wall of the Cupcake Station, the local bakery on Nine Mile Road in downtown Ferndale, where it will be featured indefinitely.

“I’m very excited to have my art go up,” Krysiak says. “It means a lot to me.”
