Inside Children's Hospital of Michigan: Neurology and Neurosurgery Departments

With specialized expertise, high-tech equipment and the ability to handle breadth of neurological issues, there’s no question why Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s neurology and neurosurgery departments have received national accolades.

As to why parents should choose it for their child’s care comes down to common sense.

“Our practice is just geared toward our pediatric population,” says Dr. Steven Ham, chief of neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. That means the specialists who work there are interested in caring for kids, and the equipment used at the hospital is designed for children. This might not always be the case at hospitals that treat a lot of adults and fewer children. “We’d like to think that this is sort of the specialty place to go if your child is having a problem.”

Fellowship-trained doctors at Children’s Hospital of Michigan have had additional time studying their pediatric specialties, he says. Plus, between the two departments, anything related to the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerves – even injuries and developmental problems – can be addressed. “We can basically handle just about anything you can imagine.”

Some of the specialized services are Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autism, developmental and behavioral issues, epilepsy, brain tumors, headaches, pediatric multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuroimmunology, sleep issues and much more.

And with multiple locations across southeast Michigan, getting the expertise of Children’s Hospital of Michigan doctors close to home is easier than ever. At the Children’s Hospital of Michigan Troy location, which opened in early 2016, the Neurology Clinic is open to see kids on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays – an added convenience for families.

“We want to take care of people,” Ham says. “It’s as simple as that.”
