A Call for Black Voices

Metro Parent is trying to create a space for the voices of Black parents in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor to be heard. Here's how you can get involved.

After the death of George Floyd, and with the global Black Lives Matter protests that followed, the staff here at Metro Parent decided we needed to take a look at the work we’re doing.

While we’ve never shied away from tough topics and always worked toward a wide breadth of coverage, it became clear that we could do more to provide parents with resources to help kids better understand race and racism.

That’s why we created the Talking About Race page at MetroParent.com and filled it with posts that help parents of all colors better teach their kids about race and raise them to be anti-racist.

But we want to do more. We want to use our platform to amplify the voices of local Black parents, too. We can’t do this alone though, so we’re turning to our community and putting out a call to Black parents in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor to share their parenting experiences with us and our readers.

It is our hope that by providing a space for Black parents to be heard that we can start conversations about problems the Black community faces and help our communities move toward positive change.

If you would like to get involved, please email us at editor@metroparent.com with the subject line “Black voices.”
