Shelby Township Dad Creates Just Add Tomatoes Pizza Sauce

This sauce, which is now being sold at Kroger, is a local dad's delicious accident.

Shelby Township dad Matthew Tidrow, a firefighter, is creative and careful in the kitchen. But he wound up creating a great pizza sauce by total accident.

While making pizza, as Tidrow and his four sons typically do every week, dad realized he was out of his usual sauce. So he threw some spices together with a can of crushed tomatoes.

“It turned out awesome,” Tidrow says. “From that point on I would pre-measure all of the spices out and place them in a Ziploc bag, so that way my kids could make the sauce. I said to myself ‘I am a genius – I just saved myself an hour-and-a-half worth of time.'”

Teaming up with a fellow firefighter from St. Clair Shores, Tidrow turned his idea into Just Add Tomatoes spice packets, now sold at Kroger.

Not to mention, his kids – Joey, 12, Daniel, 10, Michael, 8, and Andrew, 5 – can make the sauce all on their own.

5 yummy uses

  1. Pizza (of course). “There are pre-made crusts, refrigerated dough, French bread, English muffins, bagels, tortilla shells. There are a lot of options and sometimes you have to get creative,” Tidrow says.
  2. Grilled chicken Parmesan.
  3. Chicken strip Parmesan (same as above, but with baked chicken strips).
  4. Spaghetti sauce (add some tomato paste, too).
  5. Marinara sauce.
