Upcycled Christmas Crafts: How to Make an Upcycled Gift Box

Turn empty containers into gift boxes with this simple tutorial and five materials. Here are the details.

When you’ve got a mountain of gifts to wrap for Christmas, inevitably it happens: you run out of wrapping supplies. From Santa Claus wrapping paper to tape, it almost always seems like you run out of wrapping supplies during the holidays when it’s the least convenient time possible. To keep that possibility at bay, have your children turn empty containers into cheery gift boxes to use now through the New Year.

We eat a lot of The Laughing Cow cheese in our house, so we tend to have these empty circular containers in our recycling bin from time to time. The boxes are made out of a fairly sturdy paper, so they have the makings of a great gift box. A little bit of paint and some fun crafting decorations are all your child will need to make some DIY wrapping that’s one of a kind.

Materials

  • Empty The Laughing Cow cheese container
  • Acrylic craft paint (your choice for the color)
  • Paintbrush
  • All-purpose craft glue
  • Small pompoms

Instructions

To get started, have your child peel off all of the paper labels on the container. You’ll find a label on the top and bottom of the carton as well as around the sides. Try to scrape off as much of the glue as possible.

Next, paint the container with your favorite holiday color. Make sure to paint the inside of the carton, too, so that all nooks and crannies are covered. Let the container dry completely before adding additional coats of paint, if you like.

Once the paint has dried, it’s time to start adding pompoms to the top of the container. Working from the outside in, apply a small drop of glue to each pompom and position into place on the lid. Have working with different colors; try alternating solid rings with multicolor rings!

Add pompoms to the top so that it’s completely covered. Let dry.

With the glue dried and pompoms in place, you can fill the container with your gift of choice. Think about adding chocolates or even a small toy to share with a family member or friend!
