Inside Out Sandwich Recipe

That, naturally, is Backwards Day lingo for "Happy April Fool's Day! "April 1 is everyone's annual excuse to do a little leg-pulling. And since this year's date falls on a Sunday, that means parents have all day long to cook up at least a couple quips or wacky antics to throw off the kids a bit (c'mon – you know you wanna!).

We set our Metro Parent time machine's button back to April 1988 – seriously – for an oldie-but-goody way to have some fun with food: Inside Out Sandwiches! This recipe popped up in our eight-ever issue of Metro Parent – which, back then, was called All Kids Considered. It also suggested trying this recipe for a "Turnabout Day Party," where kid guests wear mixed-up clothing, invitations are written backwards, visitors are greeted at the back door and everyone eats at a picnic table inside.

Whether you want it's part of a bigger scheme or just a fun little family extra, give these quirky sandwiches a try!

Inside Out Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 tsp. mayonnaise
  • 1/4 tsp. prepared mustard
  • dash dill weed
  • 1 pckg. sliced smoked chicken, turkey, corned beef or roast beef or thinly sliced America, Swiss or muenster cheese

Directions

  1. Carefully cut the crusts off the bread.
  2. Mix the mayo with mustard and dill.
  3. Spread mayo mix on top of bread slices, place two slices together and cut sandwich into five long longs.
  4. Layer one slice meat or cheese over the other so that they overlap.
  5. Place the sandwich log at the edge of one meat/cheese slice and roll it up so that the bread is neatly wrapped inside. Trim excess meat if necessary.
  6. Surprise the family with these inside-out treats!
