Cheese Fondue Recipe

Chilly weather got you and the kids pining for some comfort food? Try some cheese – fondue style! That’s right, mom and dad: This dish – with French and Swiss roots and a party hit in the U.S. back in the 1960s – is a tasty, healthy snack with blast-from-the-past appeal sure to entertain children (and parents!). And since it’s a communal dish, it’s fun for the entire family to dig in.

Our cheese fondue recipe – cooked up by Alyssa Martina, Metro Parent publisher – features a yummy mix of gruyere and cheddar cheeses, plus other seasonings. Or toss in other cheese you might have in your fridge: In Switzerland, after all, fondue was reportedly a trick to using up hardened cheese (since it’s all melted down).

Sure, you could serve it in a snazzy fondue pot – but that’s not a necessity. You can simply sample this gooey concoction straight out of the same heavy pan (either stainless steel or non-stick works) you use to blend the ingredients. Slice up some crusty French bread or vegetables (broccoli and apple slices work well) for a dunk-able snack that’s got a healthy kick.
