Cirque du Soliel Quidam at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit

Zoe is little girl with a blue hat, giant curiosity … and sinking sense of boredom. See, sadly, Zoe's parents ignore her. So she slips away – to Quidam. More specifically, to Cirque du Soliel's Quidam, visiting Joe Louis Arena in Detroit Feb. 2-5, 2012.

That's the premise for this latest visual feast of aerial feats, dreamed up by the famed Canadian entertainment company. And, while this production has acrobats, entertainers, singers and musicians, it's an understatement to call it a "circus."

It's practically a party for the senses, with larger-than-life characters and fanciful settings that create a powerful, captivating show lightly held by the simple story of a young child who escapes into an imaginary world. Her tale gives a voice, according to the show's creative team, to the "nameless passer-by" – that is, the quidam.

Zoe's world is filled with 11 acts featuring performers using hoops, ropes and lengths of silk for aerial and acrobatic acts – along with a 15-person group that creates human pyramids, youngsters whose work with a diabolo (i.e., a super cool Chinese yo-yo) is an art form, jugglers and living statues.

This is truly a stage spectacle for the entire family, from the youngest lap-sitter to the grandparents.

Tickets are $35-$100. And show times are as follows:

  • Thursday, Feb. 2: 7:30 p.m.
  • Friday, Feb. 3: 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.
  • Saturday, Feb. 4: 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.
  • Sunday, Feb. 5: 1 and 5 p.m.
