Butterfly Festival at University of Michigan Museum of Natural History

When it comes to things to do in Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History offers some cool opportunities for families. On Saturday, May 13, 2017, the museum hosts its annual Butterfly Festival.

This enjoyable spring event will teach children about the life cycle and lifestyles of butterflies while focusing on the conservation of monarchs. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., families can visit different themed stations, enjoy hands-on activities and see live butterflies.

Children will be able to visit arts and crafts stations, and make their own butterfly wings to take home. Butterfly wings can be cut out of paper and decorated with markers, glitter and other fun materials.

After arts and crafts, children can learn the difference between a butterfly and a moth at an educational station. Learning stations incorporate videos, photos and the butterfly tent. At the butterfly tent, families can see multiple live butterflies in their own special environment. At another learning station, they will be able to see how caterpillars prepare to become butterflies – and some that are already in their cocoon. Children can go into an enclosed area and feed the butterflies. Plus, they’ll learn what plants are good for them.

The University of Michigan Museum of Natural History will be open to the public during and after the Butterfly Festival.

Up to 500 guests are expected to attend this event, and all are welcome to stay and explore the rest of the museum after the butterfly activities. There is a $6 suggested donation for admission.
