The Crane Maiden at the PuppetART Detroit Puppet Theater

The beloved tale of The Crane Maiden takes center stage select dates in April 2017 at PuppetART in Detroit with a show that incorporates Japanese costumes, poetry and music.

Witness the classic Japanese folktale The Crane Maiden, complete with traditional costumes and puppets, on select dates throughout April 2017 at the PuppetART Detroit Puppet Theater.

The tale explores the impact of good and bad decisions through the story of a young man who rescues a crane and is rewarded but must resist the temptation to betray his crane-turned-wife’s trust. The “actors” onstage are puppets handled by two puppeteers outfitted in traditional Japanese costumes and masks.

As PuppetART explains on its website, “[…] symbolic visual elements of the production create a universe filled with subtlety, inner power, moral significance and a deep sensitivity to the beauties of the natural world.”

The family-friendly show features music, poetry and intricate stage design sure to captivate the attention of even the most squirmy little ones.

If that’s not enough to convince you, the production took home the top prize in the choreography category at the 2015 Wilde Performing Arts Awards and was nominated in the Best Theater for Young Audiences category, too.

PuppetART has been putting on productions for nearly 20 years, so expect a talented crew to be running the show. It was founded in 1998 and all members of the troupe are masters of puppetry art theater, according to the theater’s website.

All events at PuppetART feature a tour, performance and a workshop, too. Other upcoming productions include Sleeping Beauty, the Russian folktale Kolobok and Banana for Turtle.

The Crane Maiden runs April 1, 2, 15, 20, 22 and 23, 2017. Public performance tickets cost $10 per child and $15 per adult. The workshop after each performance is priced at $8 per person. Showtimes vary.

PuppetART is located at 25 E. Grand River Ave. in Detroit. For more information, check the Facebook page, email boxoffice@puppetart.org or call 313-961-7777.
