Folktales are cultural gems – and Kolobok is no exception. A Russian perspective on The Gingerbread Man, Kolobok, presented by PuppetART Detroit Puppet Theater, in Detroit will help kids learn about, and respect, another country’s traditions through a familiar story.
The local PuppetART troupe began presenting this show at its former home back in 1999, and it continues to be its most-performed play. This year though, the little dumpling named Kolobok learns his lesson on the stage of the Jazz Cafe at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, April 29, 2018.
As in The Gingerbread Man, a homemade “boy” runs away from home and has to experience life’s lessons without the help of those who love him. Unlike the title character of the American folktale, though, Kolobok is able to outsmart the fox and find his way home.
The story is seen through the eyes of two forest creatures Kolobok meets in the magical forest. The bright and colorful play has original music the whole family can enjoy.
The show starts at 2 p.m. and tickets are $10 for kids and $15 for adults.
And after the show, you can learn a little more about the marionettes that brought the story to life, and for an extra $8, make a puppet to take home.
