DIY Duct Tape Bow Ties Project for Prom

Thanks to duct tape, creating a do-it-yourself outfit for prom has never been easier or more fun! For several years now, teens have let their imaginations run wild creating ball gowns, tuxedos, accessories and even corsages out of the hardware store staple. Manufacturers are hip to the trend, too. Never before have there been so many color and pattern choices for duct tape. If your son is getting ready for prom, have him make his own bow tie for the big night.

Materials

  • Duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Bow tie template (click on image to the right)
  • Cardstock
  • Glue dots
  • Safety pin or hair clip
  • Ruler

Instructions

1. Start out by creating a 13-inch duct tape sheet. If you remember our duct tape lunch bag from last year, we created panels by overlapping, 1/4-inch duct tape strips across one another.
2. Print out your template and cut it out. Trace onto your duct tape sheet.
3. Cut out your bow tie shape.
4. Place one glue dot in the center of the bow tie. Fold over one end and secure to the dot.
5. Repeat for the other end.
6. With your panel scraps, cut out a 1/2-inch long strip. Place a dot on the back of the bow tie and secure one end of the center strip to it. Fold to the front and secure with another dot. Fold over again.
7. Place two dots at the top of the center section of the bow tie. Trim your 1/2-inch strip so that it just overlaps the center section. Bend up, creating an arch, and secure to the dots.
8. Use the channel for a safety pin or hair clip to attach to the shirt collar.
